Sagrada Família Dress Code
The basilica's published rules: no see-through clothing, trousers and skirts to at least mid-thigh, no swimwear, no bare shoulders in the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament — and refusal without refund. Jeans and shorts explained, plus bags and towers.
The Sagrada Família is a working Catholic basilica and enforces a dress code at the door — and, per its own rules, refuses non-compliant visitors without refund. The rules are short and about coverage, not fabric. Here they are, with the questions people actually ask answered.
The published rules
- No see-through clothing.
- Trousers and skirts must reach at least mid-thigh.
- No swimwear.
- No bare shoulders in the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament (the reserved-for-prayer chapel).
- No special festive clothing or decorations.
That is the whole list. It is a coverage rule — mid-thigh, not knee — and it applies to everyone.
The questions
Can you wear jeans? Yes. Jeans are fine; the rule is about coverage, not fabric.
Can I wear shorts? Yes, if they reach at least mid-thigh. Very short shorts do not pass. Denim shorts to mid-thigh are fine.
Bare shoulders / tank tops? Fine in the nave; not in the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament — carry a scarf or light layer if you want to enter it.
How strict is it? Strict at the door and refusal is without refund, so treat mid-thigh as a hard line. Guided groups get reminded at the meeting point — one small practical argument for a guided entry.
Can you bring a purse or bag? Yes — you pass through an airport-style security check; normal bags are fine in the basilica. For the towers, all rucksacks and bags must go in the lockers before you go up (tower rules).
Hats? Not listed as banned; taking them off inside a church is the custom.
What to wear, practically
Barcelona is hot from June to September and the basilica is a long stand-and-look visit: light trousers or a mid-thigh skirt, closed or sturdy shoes if you are doing the tower’s spiral descent, and a scarf for the chapel. Nothing else is required.
